The technique of cobalt blue decorations seems to have been made in the Middle East in the 9th century, through experiments with white ceramics. Cobalt blue pigments were extracted from the mines of Central Iran from the 9th century onwards and exported as a raw material to China.
Chinese blue and white ware was copied in Europe from the 16th century onwards, with the blue and white earthenware technique called “alla porcellana“. In the 17th and 18th centuries, blue and white Oriental porcelain was highly valued in Europe and America, sometimes enriched with silver and gold frames, it was collected by kings and princes.
